Aurora Borealis from Norway, Tromso

After having missed several opportunities to witness the Aurora Australis from Tasmania and Sydney, I decided to visit the city of northern lights in the hopes of viewing the spectacle once and for all. It certainly paid off .

I was extremely fortunate to witness the northern lights from Tromso on 7 out of the 9 nights, with 3 been absolutely exceptional. I've taken hundreds if not thousands of images in the hope of creating a time lapse. These photos were the ones which I particularly liked.

The best way I could describe the experience of viewing the northern lights is in the words of Austrian explorer Julius von Payer, "No pencil can draw it, no colors can paint it, and no words can describe it in all its magnificence".

wow - now that a simple response to a complex beautiful diorama - i say that because you must of felt small with all that heavenly glory above - a scene so detailed it seems unearthly.

Wow, Mohammed, those are special pictures! Looks like the weather, sky and your photography skill conspired to give you a heap of treats - those are better than any I took in a combined total of over 6 months in Iceland in the early-mid 2000s. I'm suitably impressed

Thanks Andy I'd love to visit Iceland someday, but chose not to this time simply because of the constant cloud cover.

Mohammed, looks like you really hit the jackpot with those pics out of Tromso! Did you end up going with a tour or doing your own thing?

Glad to see you finally got to see the sky go nuts. Well done Mohammed, and great images too! One trip you won't forget in a hurry I think.

Hi Chris I booked with a tour (Gunnar and Kjetil) for the first 3 nights. The rest of the 6 nights I ventured out without a guide as I knew where the main spots were. Can definitely recommend a guided tour though as they were fantastic hosts

Great images. I'm hoping to go there next year.

Would you mind describing how you took your images? Gear, settings, etc?
