Here is the Cats Paw Nebula in pushed colour. Here for big.
Taken on an RCOS 10" RC Scope at f9, SBIG STXL6303E Camera and PME mount at itelescopes Siding Spring Observatory.
Processed with CCDstack, Star Tools and Photoshop. 37 hrs Total exposure time.
Ha, SII,Ha,OIII. Mapped as LRGB in "modified Hubble", a new processing experience for me.l
Ha 19hrs, 40min subs bin1. SII 5hrs 40min subs bin2, OIII 13hrs 40min subs bin2. And some 1hr for RGB stars. OIII was very dim.
Some may imagine seeing some artifacts, thats an optical illusion. And thanks in advance for pointing out wonky stars, I know about them .
Possibly, one may describe this as "overcooked", but you know, what ever it takes to be a bit different and make it pop .
Your photo has initiated some unexpected electrical impulses in my brain resulting in a thought that eventually grew to a desire to yet again reprocess my attempt at this nebula and to stretch the data further...
Awwsome Fred! Love it
Rules are meant to be broken and both you and Slawomir have shattered them here on this target. Truly something to strive for and well done for pushing yourself (and your data) even further.
Crackingly good result and yet another benchmark image for funky image processing in NB. 37 hrs eh? Sob #backtothebloodybackyardagainandybu cketloadsmoredatarequired!

Reason: Typo
I like it a lot. The decision to not over-push the OIII when in fact there isn't much there is saluted. The pedal-to-the-metal approach to the red SII over Ha is fair given that it is one of the few objects where there is much more SII than OIII emission up there, you've collected enough hours of SII to nail it, and it fits nicely with the idea that the toe pad at 5 o'clock is in fact a barbecued chicken, and the heat is on. Yum. Nicely captures the special feel of this particular object.
I really like it. It really gives the impression of a massive fireball in space,
Great image Fred
Thanks Scott. Yes, modified Hubble works well here, is awefull in standard Hubble.

EDIT: Wow, 37 hours...
Cheers Slawomir. Its the hrs that allowed the stretch (OIII was rubbish though, as you must have found). I dont allways stretch so hard though, you can loose the 3D effect, yours is excellent the way it is IMO. I tried to copy yours as much as I could with extra strectch, it was my reference, I hope that doesnt annoy you to much, its cheating a bit, but i couldnt resist, it was such a good colour balance .

Thanks Rodney. Sometimes I get away with overcooked.... I think .

Thanks Andy. To my dispare straight RGB is so rule bound (to even look reasonably good) I find it near impossible. Funky, I like it. The hrs certainly let me mess with it more. It supprises me that Slawomir gets such a fantastic result with way less apature and exposure time, thats a whole level of processing beyond me!.

Very best,
Mike
Thanks Mike. I couldnt push the OIII anymore, it was really rubbish despite the exposure time. I still have clipping on the highlights (that was mostly on the OIII) despite this time useing lots of clipping masks. The data was damaged so early on that I couldnt go back without starting from scratch. The SII was huge, as you say unusual and allowed this pallete.
My only critique is that at first glance it looks a bit monchromatic. I can see the nuances in colour but it needs to be teased out a bit more IMHO. I tweaked it a bit, and sure enough the additional colours, though subtle, made it pop even more. I'll post it if you're interested.

It's not cheating at all Fred! I looked for inspiration in Rick's and other's interpretations too!

Okay, I will tell you my secret...it's mathematical...
( 3nm Astrodons + Sony's CCD ) * PixInsight = anyone can do it!

Cheers, Marcus
Yes, I struggled a bit with that, tried to add a bit more red, failed. I would be very interested to see what you did Marcus, post it please.

Best to blink with your original IIS image. It's quite subtle but I find the last subtle steps of processing can often add a lot of value. Anyway, you be the judge!

You won't hurt my feelings if you don't like it!
Thats the kind of thing I was thinking too but didnt. Perhaps not that shade of red, but I get the idea, it certainly improves on the monotonic look. Thanks Marcus.
