Mac Software for Astrophotography

Hi All,

I have been searching around the forum but have't come across a definitive answer to the Software that is best suited for the Mac.

I am pretty new to all this and would appreciate some advice on the best software for a beginner.

At this stage I have just taken some pictures using my Nikon D5000 without the use of a telescope. I now need some idea of what stacking software is compatible with the Mac. Freeware would be my first choice but if there isn't anything suitable then a reasonably priced piece of software would be acceptable. I have seen Nebulosity but from what I've seen it isn't compatible with a Nikon. Is this correct?

I look forward to your responses.

Mis

I have a mac and while I can't use program's like DeepSkyStacker, you can use programs like Pixinsight. You can get 45 day free trial to test. I've only done a few photos but it stacks and allows editing. Haven't really played to much with it though, but there are YouTube tutorials on it. Might be worth a shot. Photoshop is also good for a bit of a polish on a final stacked image.

Hope that helps

Try this :http://blog.tom-goetz.org/2013/01/ru...indows-on.html

it'll allow you to run DSS under a Mac OS environment.

You can try this for the Stacking under mac : http://www.andreasroerig.de/regim/regim_e.htm

Control software for a Nikon might be tricky. Windows support can be patchy, but the Mac, gee i'm don't know

Maybe this will help: http://www.sofortbildapp.com or
nikons own software : http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/software/control_pro2/.

i don't know the cost of these or compatibility with your camera, but its worth a look.

Goran.

Are you wanting to stack planetary images?

If so, have you tried Lynkeos?

Yeah I gave the wineskin a go but it wouldn't work properly so I gave up lol. If the OP can get it working fully, then this is probable a safe bet

Chris - Yes, eventually I will be stacking planetary images. Just trying to get used to taking multiple exposures and how to set my camera up before I start doing the planetary stuff.

Well the good news is that it has worked okay for me just one issue when registering. It throws up an error but if then choose stack it seems to work ok.

Thanks for this I have tried the DSS and may also try Registack and then decide on which one.

The most frustrating thing is I thought I had taken pictures of three different areas of the sky but that does not seem to have happened. I'm not too sure whether there was a problem with my lead

However, I do have one stacked picture but now need to put it in Photoshop and see what I can do with it.

Autostakkert 2 works with Mac. Under Wine. I've used it a few times, does a good job on planets.

I use Neb 3 for stacking as well. Works well on Mac.

Don't know about Nikon stuff. Nobody here uses Nikon. Only Canon or CCD.

But you could probably make up a patch camera cable to take the images (an intervalometer) and download to Neb 3 and stack there, offline. I did it with analog video, it just works. Mind you I had to write a utility to convert frames of a .mov to images (TIFF or PNG) before Neb would look at it.

Regards,
Tony Barry
