He died of lung cancer, the "legal" drug killed him.
His unique voice shall be missed, I for one am saddened by his passing.

Officer and a Gentleman would have been a complete flop without Up Where We Belong. He MADE that movie... just that silly ending with a perfect song.

Lots of good hits. A shame he's gone.

Mad Dogs and Englishmen

What a loss , RIP Joe.
He was one of a kind with a style and voice all his own.

The Letter

He didn't cover songs, he possessed them, he was unreal.

Thank you for the music.

Sad loss of a unique voice and personality. He certainly made some songs his own. RIP Joe and thanks for the memories.

He's the only guy to make a Beatles song sound better than the original. I still get a buzz from watching him sing it at Woodstock.

Cheers Rev.

I too love his reworking of the beatles songs
but how about 801's version of "Tomorrow Never Knows"
and The Zoot's great adaption of "All The Lonely People",
that they renamed "Elanor Rigby".

Both better than the originals I reckon.

Brian
The Beatles song was called Eleanor Rigby, from their Revolver Album in 1966 and released as a double A side single with Yellow Submarine at the same time.
Personally, I know some like the Zoot version, but not a patch on the original.

I stand corrected but I still think it's way better than the original.

It is another sad loss. The Letter was always a favourite. His Mad Dogs and Englishmen album was the first double album I bought and I think I was about 14/15. It was on tape :-)

I taped that album on a reel to reel as it was being aired by an overseas shortwave radio station, local AM stations were crap.

I'll miss him.

Mad Dogs and Cocker Happy are in my vinyl collection - stored away in Australia so I cannot give them a spin in tribute unfortunately.

ps. Zoot - Eleanor Rigby - the 45 is also in my vinyl collection!
