Mouse based setting circles

Gidday All,
this is me just thinking out aloud again.

Has any one tried to use the red optical(laser) mouse parts to make a counter for positioning. I think that a large enough disc with a mouse at the edge could produce enough counts for sub degree positions. The mouse serial usb needs to be hacked via software or break into the hard ware and read signals via a converter. The size of the disc would mean more counts along the edge.

And, just as another thought, using the inside of a CD/DVD player and custom disc as the setting circles, which again would mean a hardware and software hack.... using he dvd laser to read special disc format encoding.

I will be trying to work this out but will take me a long time...so looking to see if the brains trust see any short cuts.

I am aware of the small servo and encoder wheel options, this idea may have better resolution...

All feed back most wlecome, kind regards, Alan.

Alan,
This has been discussed couple of years ago here on forum..
It's not possible to use optical mouse for this purpose, since optical mouse uses a camera and various algorithms to derive the movement from changing image. The result of this is non-repeatability.. which is fine for mouse, but not OK for encoder.

You will find a lot on this subject here:

and here

Of course, opto-mechanical mouse is something else.. and it is used (but they are not easy to find these days).
Other option is to use encoders (wheels and opto-interrupret modules) from old printers, scanners..
