Heading to Tassie

We're heading off to Tasmania in early November for just over a week. Just the wife & I. We're in the process of trying to work out an itinerary to suit these dates and could do with a little help.

• Arrive Devonport (disembark the Spirit of Tas) on Sunday morning 9th Nov.
• Depart Devonport on Sunday evening 16th Nov.

So that makes 8 full days on the island. We'll be taking our own car, and we're thinking of staying in hotels, B&B's, cabins. What places are must visits, and what places can we leave til next time. Clockwise or anticlockwise? All those things.

We did 15 days fly/drive in June/July to Hobart. We went anticlockwise around the island - and I can tell you it was not enough time and we did not get to a number of places that we would have liked to do so.

Having said that, I'd prioritise on some key areas and hit those, e.g. Cradle Mountain (Peppers is excellent there, although a bit expensive). If you'd like to do an excellent cave tour, go to the Mole Creek Caves on the way to Cradle Mountain. Other excellent areas include but are certainly not limited to: Bicheno/Freycinet, Franklin-Gordon River area, Mt Field NP.

Jump on to TripAdvisor and go through the posts there - there's a few locals that are regular helpers and they'll give you some excellent advice.

As Chris said, a week is not enough to see everything, I suggest to choose one side now and go back for the other side later.
Were it me, I would head west from Devonport, then see Cradle Mtn, Mole Creek, The Nut at Stanley, the northern coast on the way. then down the west coast to Strahan etc and back up the middle via Arthur's Lake, Great Lake, Miena.

Save the north-east and east coast for the next time.

If the weather is good, do NOT miss the Brunie Island cruise. Fabulous
day out. They have won Australia wide awards. Salamanca markets on
Saturday mornings is really enjoyable; all sorts of products, and high quality buskers. Wineglass Bay is good, especially if you like photography.
The gorge in Launceston is great, and only a couple of minutes from town.

Thanks all for the replies. Unfortunately we're a bit limited time wise as we need to fit this trip in with my wife's chemo treatment and visits to the doctors. We plan to go back soon for another week. Maybe in March next year. Then off to europe next year as well. We've got a few trips planned for the near future. Just got to fit them all in.

first of all, I'm so sorry to hear your dear other half is in need of chemo, my best to her.

But secondly, I wouldn't worry too much about fitting 'it' all in. Take a couple of pointers from the suggestions here, and just concentrate on having a great time whilst relaxing at the same time.

I reckon your wife would find a less hurried itinerary more beneficial.

Cheers for that Paul. She's doing OK. We have taken the attitude "it is what it is". No point stressing about stuff and making us both sick.

We've decided that we're just going over. Should be a nice holiday. Planning on doing some of the Targa Tasmania stage roads in the process. I even polished the wife's car yesterday in readiness.

We're not even going to pre book accommodation. Just rock up and take our chances.

It's all about relaxing. Like the idea of cruises and the like. Plus the consumption of fresh local seafood part appeals to us. Can't wait.

Well, I'm going to pretend I know what I'm doing. It seems to work for me in my day job...

Yeah, last night, after my original post, we talked about it a bit more and went "hey, lets just wing it". We did the same when we went to Sydney a couple of years ago. We booked accommodation then because we stayed in one place for the week, but everything else was spur of the moment. I must say,it was fun doing it like that.
