Linked Images
Can you tell me why I can't include an offsite image in a thread.
I mean using the IMG tags to show an external image.
I don't know of any other forum that does this.

I think it was an issue of traffic. Back when it was first proposed, I don't think ADSL was as widespread/fast/dodgy data plans as it is today. I think!

There were a couple of reasons:
1. Hotlinking can use other sites bandwidth when they don't want it
2. Downloads the image (sometimes very large images) in people's browsers without them wanting it or getting a choice about it
3. Screws up the forum layout with large wide images etc.
Attachments are fine, otherwise linking to the image directly, giving people a choice, is fine.

Well it's a pain in the arse yankin images off line and reducing them to suit this clown show. Labor runs the nanny states in this country not you. Grow up. Put an icon in the wings to identify off site images.

haha thanks Robin, you're more than capable of making your own decisions on whether to post here or not.
If putting a link to an image, instead of having it embedded, is as big an issue as you make out, then I'm glad for you that in your life there's no bigger things to worry about it.

Robin, on another forum I frequent (Ausphotography) my biggest gripe is missing hotlinked images. A great deal of the time links are broken, expired or temporarily unavailable or the original posters accounts on the hotlinked site are deleted and the files no longer exist, so much so that if I find a user who regularly links images which are "expired", I avoid that users posts.
Regarding "the look of the site" it also looks like crap when you view a thread with pages of missing images.
The abovementioned forum actively encourages hotlinking for the simple reason that it reduces their bandwidth use, i.e. they're putting the cost ofserving downloaded images on to someone else.
Apart from the reasons Mike has outlined linked images are most often a PITA for end users.

Phil, there is one difference in linking to a removed image and embedding a link to a removed image. The linked image shows the the link which goes no where and gives you no idea that the the image is missing. The embedded image should show a missing file icon.
**** em all I recon ... Obviously not open to change and making personal attacks is just sad.
Just bought another Bike here.

haha you can say "...to suit this clown show. Labor runs the nanny states in this country not you. Grow up."
and yet you call my polite reply a personal attack?
I still don't understand how this small issue gets you so worked up.

Couldn't you just make a thumbnail and have a link for full under it, thumb nail made using iis's own image upload. If people really want to look at your full image they will click the url link for it then

Not everyone has bandwidth to spare. I'm on satellite. I pay and I pay a lot relative to ADSL for bandwidth both ways, not just downloads, and there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth plans on satellite. It is pathetically slow as well ATM. NBN Satellite would be lucky to be as quick as the old dial up at peak times ATM. I am not exaggerating, and I have no choice (other than dial up which is slow all the time).
I frequent another forum with embedded images, but if I open a thread with embedded images in it... the show's over during peak times. When someone replies to a post with an embedded image the images goes again, and again and again... all the same data over and over chewing up bandwidth.
IIS has got it right IMHO.

Forget it Phil, I'm shutting up the astro side of things and selling everything off. It's an endless loop of the same targets which just requires more and more money to keep it interesting. I'll leave it to the professionals.
