I got a new Camera!

My new Olympus OM-D E-M5 with 12 - 50 zoom lens has arrived!



Just charging the battery now. First impressions (without power) - very compact and light (smaller than a real OM) and the quality looks good. I got the silver version, cause that's what my old OM's were, so it looks proper...

I too had, and still do have the famous OM selection, damn good cameras in their day.

Congrats, hope you get plenty of joy from your new addition Al, they seem to be pretty good from all accounts.

...no... that's not the right attitude... the OM-D will take photos whether its clear or not! You can't pin it on me!

I loved my old OM. It does remind me of it.

Looking forward to getting a couple of good prime lenses for it.

I'm very happy with the little beasty so far. Seems to have much better dynamic range than the E-510. I just tried out the Fotga Electronic Lens Adapter I bought for it on eBay... all my 4/3 lenses are fully functional, and my intervalomater from the E-510 works with it as well.

I've attached 3 crops straight out of the camera - no processing - taken with my 4/3 8mm fisheye lens.

Yeah know what you mean, Deeno. They are such a small camera people don't notice them so much and you don't feel like you're carrying a big heavy camera.

Having done a lot of years bushwalking and canyoning with the OM-1, a bigger camera loses a lot of appeal for me, but the OM-D just seems great! Its capable, and so small and light.

Congratulations Al. I love mine even more now after several months of ownership. Five others in our astro society alone have now also bought the OM-D.

I have three Zuiko fast primes - 12mm f/2, 45mm f/1.8 and 75mm f/1.8, which are simply fantastic. Rated by many as good as any Canon or Nikon lenses available. The 75mm is a complete corker. So are the others, come to think of it. The standard 12-50mm zoom, (being weather proofed) is also a very good performer in its own right - especially for video with the silent motorised zoom.

Once you wrap your head around its configurability, you'll start to mould it to your shooting style. The 5-axis in-body stabilisation and LiveTime (gradual iterative exposure control) and focus peaking are my favourites. It's so full of useful features that it's hard to say where to begin, and makes you wonder why other cameras don't have many of them.

Combined with my Sony RX1, the OM-D will stay with me for a long time. If Olympus releases the OM-D E-M6 soon I might update to that, but otherwise I'm entirely satisfied with the E-M5 as it is.
