Jupiter taken with mobile phone

Hi all,

Not sure if it was just me but the seeing in Sydney last night was great.

Jupiter through my 10" Dob was showing so much detail. More than I ever saw with my old 12.5" Meade Starfinder. I recently purchased Crescendo's 2x Tele Vue Barlow and was viewing Jupiter with my stock standard 10mm eye piece. Even at 5mm with the Barlow the cloud bands were as clear as day. So much detail I was blown away! For once I saw the Great Red Spot and also saw one of the moons disappear behind Jupiter.

I had to try and capture a photo even though I knew it wouldn't have all the detail I was seeing, it just looked that good. So out came my Samsung Galaxy SII. Was difficult trying to position the camera over the eye piece. Was trying to avoid over exposing Jupiter as well. Attached are 2 of the best shots I managed. They are nothing compared to what is out there obviously, but they aren't bad for being from a mobile phone, hand held over an eye piece.

I processed these a little in Photoshop to bring out more of the detail. However really these do not do the amount of detail I saw justice!

Thanks for looking,

Jason

That great Jason! It's more than I can capture on some nights with my CCD camera! Pity you didn't have a CCD/DSLR camera handy to capture the moment.

Cheers guys! Yeah really got to get an attachment for my 60D to my dob. Would've been perfect! Planetary imaging bug is biting me.
