Looking for an astronomy club

The idea of getting into astronomy first got in my head when I visited Gladstone and saw a sky I never saw in Brisbane - did my thorough research and I bought a second hand 8" Dob and a pair of 10x50 binoculars, sky charts and what not. And here comes cloudy skies for two weeks straight. It seems all clubs start around when school starts, I live on southside, any good ones you guys would recommend?

Hi Nathan,

Sounds like you have the gear sorted. We are lucky to have at least 3 astronomical societies in Brisbane. Check out Brisbane Astronomical Society, South East QLD Astronomical Society or Southern Astronomical Society. BAS and SEQAS hold thier meetings and public viewing events on the north side of town. SAS hold their events on the south side. I think there is a group working out of the Redlands area as well.

www.bas.asn.au/index.html

www.seqas.org/index.html

www.sas.org.au/index.html

All these groups are going to provide you with a great chance to learn the trade with experienced observers and astro photographers. All of these groups have a lot to offer.

I joined BAS and can vouch for their willingness to assist new members.

Regards,
Stu.

Not sure what the SAS membership fees are. I am sure that their website will provide contact details. Best get in touch with someone at SAS to get accurate information.

Thanks for all your quick replies! I did check out the prices. What I was really asking was whether I have to pay the $30 or (whatever) the first time I go, or only if I want to join and participate everytime the observation nights are on, or only if I wanted to get the publications and access to library etc.

Cheers!

We won't press you to stump up first time round, but we would like to think we're worth the subscription, after all we do allow you to rent an 8" dob for $10 a month
