Hi Daine, and welcome to IIS!
I have used Camera Control Pro 2 from Nikon. Expensive but does the trick!
Cant believe they charge for it and canon doesn't!
They doe have a trial version so have a look at the link and give it a go..
Its a pitty nobody has made a BackyardEOS for Nikon camera!

Cheers

I have tried the trial version seems I can't get any longer than a 30 sec exposure. Not sure if I'd like to spend money on the full version just to be stuck with the same problem

It's not an automated technique, but you can take the long exposures using an intervalometer and have the images dumped directly onto your computer as tethered shooting.

I can't remember exactly how I achieved the above, but it did work. Does your D90 have an "interval shooting" mode in the menus? Otherwise, you can buy a 3rd party timer remote on ebay for a reasonable price.

It has a multiple exposure setting with only three shots .

Which is what I have done, bought of ebay. Its a battery grip ( two battery holder) plus an intervalometer which works great ( even though its menu is a bit convoluted). And this definitely can do more than 30 secs!
I should have mentioned earlier but I was thinking software wise........
