How good is that that rim doesnt look that high from the top but geez its big down the bottom

That lake is huge! Photo #20 really puts it in perspective.

Africa has so many hidden gems, it's a pity that it's so war torn and chaotic in many places. It has the potential for so much more.

Thanks for the great link.

Apparently when it erupted in 2002, they evacuated 300,000 people out of Goma
and it destroyed 4,500 buildings leaving 120,000 homeless. About 45 people
died of carbon dioxide asphyxiation. Story from the time here on the BBC -

Yeah #20 sets the scale. This hole is huge. Long way to run up if it decides to splash around though...

So how come the rock around the rim doesn't just melt if it's constantly bathing in the molten rock contained within?

Anyone know?
