Thanks for the great link.

Apparently when it erupted in 2002, they evacuated 300,000 people out of Goma
and it destroyed 4,500 buildings leaving 120,000 homeless. About 45 people
died of carbon dioxide asphyxiation. Story from the time here on the BBC -

So how come the rock around the rim doesn't just melt if it's constantly bathing in the molten rock contained within?

Anyone know?
