Red Moon Rising

Did anyone else notice how red the moon was tonight as it rose (24 Sep)

(I observed it from Western Sydney, from Toongabbie station as I got off the train at about 7 pm)

it was almost as red as when in deep eclipse

by the time I drove home it had changed colour, wasn't as deep anymore

A most extraordinary sight

once again missed the photo opp

We actually went to a high oval nearby specifically to see the moon rise.

The first two pics are with a Nikon D700, while the others are with a Minolta SLR. The Minolta pics are a bit grainy and seem to have 'foregound stars' - perhaps bad pixels on the sensor...

My son and I went up to Crackneck lookout last night just to see it rise over the ocean (about 6:40pm). Initially I say it was deeper red than the eliclipse. I tried to photograph it in a Nikon D40 with a 200mm focal length lens but it was just too dim in the photo's. What really surprised me was how elliptical it was (looking quite flattened initially) even after it was above the ocean. I was home about half an hour after the rise and it has lost most of the reddness, was a lot rounder closer to a full moon look, and was bright enough to capture on the Nikon with the same settings I had tried earlier.
