Thumbs up My dancing princess!

Yesterday, we went to a dancing concert at the Gosford Leagues Club, for my daughter Eliza's dancing school.

She's in the preschool ballet class.

Here's a couple of shots..

I blurred out the other kids for obvious reasons.

btw on a technical note, I need a steadier left hand.. hand-holding with the 75-300 at a high zoom is damn hard.. a lot of my shots turned out slightly blurry because I couldn't hold my hand steady enough. The low light didn't help either, as the camera was obviously choosing a slightly longer shutter due to the lighting conditions. I needed a tripod, and more practise with manual settings given the conditions!

Get closer and or use higher ISO Mike, as keeping the shutter speed up will help. A guide for hand held shots is to use shutter priority or full manual and select a shutter speed shorter than 1/focal length i.e. at say 125 mm preferably use 1/125th and upwards.

ving, they were blurred in photoshop because I don't think it's a good idea to post photos of OTHER people's children They're not blurred due to depth of field

Phil, thanks for the tips. I would've liked to get closer but I wasn't really allowed to be taking pics as it was

Higher ISO and shutter priority are good tips, i'll try and remember all these things next time.. photography is such a challenge sometimes.. for each circumstance is different and requires different parameters.. It's like a checklist you need to go through in your head each time to take each set of conditions into account and set the parameters accordingly.

Any tips for getting a steadier left hand? I need to brace my elbows against my body more..

both yes and no mike. my camera has 3, by defualt it picks all 3 but manually i can pick any i like... 2 left, 1 left, 1 left and 1 right, just the centre one... whatever. you can get some intersting results.
have your subject staning to one side and use the apropriate square thingy (i have to find out again what hey are called) and blur the rest.... or if that persons in the way blur them and make the rest sharp
hehe!

Nice Shots Mike.
I usually tuck my left elbow in towards my body to sturdy the camera.

If I may make an artistic comment, Mike the way in which you have blurred the other kids (which I understand why you did out of respect for the other kids, who, incidentally I am sure were also extremely plain next to your child) makes a very dramatic effect.....gives the impression that she is at the centre of the universe, and time has stopped......
