No room left for messages

My message box is always overflowing

, and I do delete quite a few, so was wondering if, when a person gets over 1000 post, they could be entitled to, say 250 - 300 messages??

I would think that 80% of members rarely use this feature anyway?? Perhaps less than 1000 posters could be entitled to 100??
I have many messages that I dont want to delete - things I have purchased, messages of support, humour and general newsy stuff of interest from the wonderful guys/gals here.

Liz, Do a Copy and Paste into a file on your computer of all the messages you want to keep. Then delete all the messages from your inbox.

Just remember, if there is a major glitch with the sever IIS runs on, you could loose all your messages anyway.

Liz - copy/paste is not required at all - otherwise you'd have to open every post from the list to do that.

Down the bottom of the page, on the lower bar, is a pull-down menu "Selected Messages", with "Move to folder" pre-selected for you. Select all messages you wish to keep (easier just to select all) and choose "Download as CSV" or "Download as TEXT" from that same pull-down.

If you download as CSV (Comma Separated Variables) you can import your messages download file directly into a spreadsheet, with all headers and messages maintained. Just remember that you need to do this for incoming as well as sent messages.

Once you've downloaded the files, simply delete everything at the end of a month, say, and start the new month fresh.

Thanks Henry and Chris, I'II keep those tips in mind, if my request gets hammered.

I would prefer to keep them on IIS, so I know where they are.

Problem is that database management, backup and your personal message security is just another thing to maintain - and could/would never be guaranteed. At least if you dump these CSV files to your own machine every month and back them up to a USB key or other storage media you'd never lose them - and you'd have a complete history available to you, not just the last 200 messages.

Nettie - moving messages to another folder doesn't "free up" your total message count. It just makes them more organised.

The way I use it is just as you had intended - i.e. create a new folder ("June" for instance) and move "important" messages to that folder during the course of the month, getting them out of the current "inbox". At the end of the month I'd simply go to the June folder, select everything and write it to a CSV file. Once I'd downloaded that I'd just clear the June folder - claiming my space back in the process.

Well, had to do something as messages tumbling in (which I love) and I have to keep deleting to accept more. Icemasters havent said yes (or no) so have carried out Chris's suggesting and DL my older mesages as txt onto desktop. Yeah, finally no big black warning signs.

Chris ... and Henry too for your suggestion.

Im glad im not the only one that has this problem Liz I like to keep all my messages too So yes i had to save them all as text on my desktop too

Yes, I think there are a few of us Jen.

Am not sure about DL them though, as I feel they are going to get lost in the deep dark recesses of my PC, and I will never be able to find them when I want them??

IMHO (as a IT/systems/network (etc) admin myself) getting into the routine of backing up your own data both from your computer and from forums such as IIS is a fundamental part of owning a computer. Computers crash, servers crash, data can easily be lost.

If you have data anywhere you don't want to lose then back it up, don't rely on anyone else. Get yourself an external USB drive and start a weekly (at most) backup procedure.
