Having been in the hobby for less than a year the hours are starting to rack up. Although I only selected 0-500 I'm sure the next 12 months will change that

I must say with sydneys cloudy nights over the last few months most hours have been spent on IIS. But thats not a bad thing anyway .

That's about how I figure it too Dave.

Even so, I feel I'm just not putting enough time and effort in. There's so much to learn, always something new happening. I love it.

Now that would be annoying!

Were we suppose to include telescope viewing time in our estimate?
I'll have to recalculate!

Not as much as I'd like but I reckon at least 10% of my total time is spent in some sort of "astro" interest (not enough observing)...like others family, work and sleep account for the bulk of the rest.

If you look at percentage of "free time" it would be a much higher percentage.

It depends how I add it up...

Hours my telescope is collecting starlight ... about 1,700/year probably.

Hours I'm out there with it ... about 300 hours/year.

Hours I'm out in the country with my portable setup ... less than 100 hours/year.

It's the 300 which makes me feel like I don't do much astronomy, I would like to raise that number

Hey All,

I' ve only been active in astronomy for approx' 20 weeks. Total time 470 hrs. My other hobbies take up a lot of time as well.

Work is interfering with my hobbies.

Cheers Marty

Normally about 5 - 10 hours a week, but being unemployed at the moment , 3-4 times as much over the last few months.
Astronomy is probably saving me from being bored to death.

It's proportional to the decline in my other nighttime activities as I grow older

I was probably a bit hasty with that number, due to my hatred of Melbourne weather fogging my mind and memory.

I'd say I'm at the eyepiece probably 150-200 hours a year. The scope collects dust for the remaining 8560 hours

Ditto!

I think Jeanette nailed the topic also:
Time well spent. I don't even bother quantifying it
