Thumbs down Simple File Sharing in WinXP pro

Had some major drama today on two machines networked in the same workgroup. After a Microsoft Update (latest .NET) the drive mapping and shared folder stopped working on one machine. It's not the first time that happened. I tried recreating the share folders to no avail. I ended up getting the whole drive (OS) back from a backup image MBR + partition . Has anybody had similar problems with the latest Windows Updates and file sharing?

yeah, sometimes i have seen .NET updates screw with sharing, as they create a user, and set the login control through MSGINA, so after running the update sometimes a login client appears where there was none, and as your inadvertantly logged on as essentially another user, it screws up.

there is heaps of info on googling.

Since an XP update came through just after Easter Marc, file
sharing between house and Dome PCs has not worked.
Simple cable network and 4way Ethernet Hub.
Haven't had the time to look into it yet...

Been on Google all day. I can ping the machine back and forth. I can access printer/fax shares. It's only when trying to access a mapped drive or directory that I get a prompt for the guest account with a pwd? The guest account is not active anyway and the simple file sharing is supposed to be a no brainer. As its name implies it's simple file sharing. No password and no authentication on the network.

Correct. And you will be able to "Packet INternet Gopher" it all day, and do printer shares. File sharing works with different permissions than pinging, i assume they are on the same home network "192.168.0.1" thats trusted, you can ping www.virgin.net all day, doesnt mean its loves you and trusts you.
