Sun August 22nd

This morning's Sun taken with my Lunt 35mm scope.
Quite a 'smudge' on the Sun and some nice Proms.

What is the "smudge" out of interest? Or what causes it...

It’s called a filament. It is a prominence viewed overlying the solar disc.
