I managed to get some colour for my recent Ha lagoon under mainly difficult seeing conditions. Not much chance of getting any more data as it looks like the weather is closing in for the next week. I'm reasonably happy with it but as usual I forget how bright this thing is and I think the brightest stars look a bit harsh. One of these days I might get a Lagoon that I'm totally satisfied with but I don't think this one is quite there yet.
Looks really good Steve, the detail is lovely! The core looks a lot better than my attempts which have usually seemed to be a bit blown out. So, it is going to get two
I am getting a remarkable sense of depth looking at this image, Steve. The ridge at the bottom of the image, just to the right, seems to ascend back into the screen toward the hourglass, which itself appears to be sitting inside a cavern. Very interesting perspective, perhaps in part due to framing.
Looks pretty good to me Steve! But because you say you are not completely happy with it ...only things I might suggest you look at are, the baron black top left corner ...shouldn't there be gas in there bottom right corner looks a bit clipped too, dodgy flats perhaps..? And if you brightened the hourglass area, just a tad, it might look better too I recon.

The detail is lovely though

Thanks Mike. I don't think it's clipped but it is a little dark so I'll have another look. I actually prefer the hourglass area a little toned down but to each his own I guess.

Thanks. I always try to present this thing in high contrast as it does bring out the depth when you do that.

Thanks Greg. If the weather was better I would consider doing a mosaic to get all of it but sadly it looks like another week of rain coming up.
The Lagoon will be up for a while. I think it would be worth doing a mosaic.
I have most of the data for a 4 panel mosaic of the area but its wider field than this. That area is one of the best areas in the night sky, Orion, Lagoon/Trifid, Rho, Vela.

Greg.
This week is now looking a bit better so maybe it's a chance. I did do a 2 panel mosaic of it with the 12.5" a few years back that was reasonably successful. This thing is so bright of course that you don't need super long exposures so mosaics aren't the pain that they usually are (at least to me).
Wonderful view there Steve, the Ha in particular looks very crisp. Perhaps you can use it as Luminance for the coloured version?
Cheers,
Rolf
Thanks Rolf. You know I reckon I have about a dozen versions of this darned thing and I'm pretty sure I've already tried using the Ha as luminance. Just to be sure I tried it again though and it doesn't really improve it. Using Ha as luminance is something I tend to avoid anyway as it often leads to weird colour balance problems and artefacts around the stars.
very attractive image Steve - beautiful colour and you have managed the wide dynamic range very well. The resolution is also excellent and the stars tidy - I don't think they look too harsh

Thanks Ray. I did do a bit of subsequent processing which improved things I think.
