Mercury transit outreach
Had a grand day on Monday showing students the transit of Mecury.
I set up a couple of scopes, one with white light filter and one Lunt Solar Scope at my Son's High School.
The science teachers were very excited and brought class after class out to have a look. I was there for about 5 hours and had a blast...I would have stayed until the end but I had to head to Boston on business. All up I showed 6 classes and about 30 interested on-lookers who came to have a look during their free periods.
Several of the students pulled out their phones to try and take pictures. I am hoping that some of them turned out.
The morning started cloudy but by 10:00 am it was clear as could be and the view was spectacular.
The oohs and awes were a great reward...and it seems that a few young ladies were dazzled by my two boys who pitched in while their groups were out having a look. My favorite quote of the day went something like this..." A real friend holds your hair back when you are trying to see a transit". It cracked me up!
Maybe there is hope for astronomers of the future after all.
