Nice result Pat; if the ambient was reasonably low on the night in question, why don't you stack them, you might just be pleasantly surprised.

in natural dark skies are they not necessary?

I've never taken a separate dark. I know it halves my available imaging
time, but I just enable the high ISO and long exposure noise reduction functions in the camera, set the intervalometer, and leave it to do it's thing. But then I'm old and lazy.

They usually are Pat, unless your camera has exceptionally low dark current noise. A dark sky doesn't really change whether darks are needed or not.

Yes usually darks help. I was just commenting that the pic you posted is nice as it is. If you can make it better go for it!
