problem with dslr focus

hi am have just recieved a copy of dslrfocus and am having problems following the manual . I find when i press the connect button on the toolbar i get a camera control window that does not contain the 'monitor folders section as shown in the manual. the window is also arranged slightly differently to the manuals picture. when i press connect in this window the camera model window appears as described showing my camera . i press ok and the default settings appear in the control window but i still dont have the browse button etc. have attached a pic of the manuals screen and my computer screen .since i cant follow the manual without these parts of the camera control window i am at a loss to continue.Have sent an email to chris venter
regards philip

Hi Phillip. I know what you mean. I couldn't for the life of me nut that out, until I realized it was referring only to non-canon cameras. Just connect your camera and select focus mode and away you go.

hi paul,
i have a canon 350 and it is recognised by the software.however to use the canon remote software i need the missing areas in the window to instruct dslrfocus where my remote software is . also i need to fill in the box " ignore files containing " and press the button "start monitoring". as you can see by the pics i posted none of these parts of the window are there.

From memory you shouldn't need to worry about it with the canon. Your screen dump is very similar to how mine looks. The program should find it automatically. I went through the same process when I first had DSLR Focus, not being able to carry out the proceedure outlined in the manual. it was very frustrating.

Check out the images below.
Image 1 is my sreen when no canon is attached after clicking Application>connect
Image 2 is after I click "cancel" from here you can track down the required files if you really want.
Image 3 is if I select "monitor files in folder" (useing the drop down arrow beside "None" in image 2)
Image 4 is the screen I get if I select Application>connect when the Canon 300D is attached and turned on
Image 5 is the sreen I get once connected.

In the end at no time did I have to go searching for remote capture file or any sort of control files. The program did that automatically after I selected the 300D

hi paul,
i looked at your screen shots and the first does not quite match mine , no camera information window on the LHS, see my pic at start of thread . anyway i followed your instructions for image 1 and cancelled the camera model selection box and waited and waited . nothing happened the camera model box just disapppeared. image 4 and 5 are not the same as there is no camera iformation window on the lefthandside. the only change between 4 and 5 for me is the information on camera settings is displayed. all i can get to work is the image capture : manual/ automatic /long and short exposures. i tried opening up canon zoom browser /remote capture and started getting something happening between the two programs when i took pictures using the canon remote window to operate the camera. id hoped id be able to use this software to improve focus. incidently i tried the rogram on my desk top which is a p4 2.4mhz and just got the same results but quicker.am running xp on both.

Hi Phil, I don't have dslr focus, nor have I ever used it but the one thing I did notice in your screen shots, you had the capture box checked and not the focus box as all of Paul's shots show and your manual shot shows.

Just a thought, maybe this is your problem?

Out of curiosity have you changed the Communication Menu (3) to PC, the camera will not talk to your PC if this is not done, the default setting is Printer, this catches a lot of people out.

Cheers

The only other thing I can think of re connections is, have you downloaded the latest WIA Drivers from Canon. I just plug in, turn on and shoot, no problems at all.

Cheers

I am using 3.3.15.

I dont even know where this monitor folder is....i'm with john...all I do is:

1) turn camera on.
2) push the lightning bar in tool bar....see my canon 350 listed push connect
3) then either select focus or capture mode
4) when capture mode is selected the image capture window is opened....in this screen you can nominate what folder you want the images to be saved in and control both your short and long exposures.

I dont see any monitor folders on my version...whats the point of this or is it just something that I dont use.
What are you trying to achieve.....I think I have missed something..????

To be quite honest, I don't have a clue what the files are either.

Other options to check are, are you in Manual Mode?, cables, are they home made or from a dealer, other than that, you got me.

Im using the dsusb from shoestring astronomy and i know this works as dslr focus recognises it an i can use the image capture modes of the program it just does not start up as shown in pauls post which shows screen shots. its version 3.3.15 . the manual is no good because nothing corrosponds.i'd like the original version which followas the manual. has anyone noticed the difference in the start up camera control screen as i posted in my original post to the one paul posted as a follow up? they are different! i cannot access the screens following the initial camera control window ,that only resembles the one shown in the manual and paul pics.

I just started up my laptop and connected my 350D for you, my screen does NOT show the greyed out area you are mentioning, DSLRFocus operates correctly like this.

I have never seen the monitor folders screen at all, this is V 3.3.15.

I have my folders setup using the Long Exposure tab for flats, lights, darks and bias and just send the images to them, focus images go to a focus folder and are deleted during use by the program.

I use a DSUSB and a long USB cable without problems.

Cheers

hi phil. ignore pauls attachments. he's using an older version . .

make sure both the shoestring adapter is plugged into your usb port. The stereo cable into shoestring adapter and the other end to the camera. Same goes with the white usb cable which came with the camera.

- Open DSLR Focus
- Click Application then Connect to Camera
- Ensure that your camera is on and click Connect
- Select Rebel_XT from dropdown box and click Ok

That should get you connected. Once that you are connected, click Camera Control then Blub Exposure Setup then Port Setup. Click 'Test Port' button in Serial Port Setup. Wait a few seconds and you should see a green button on the bottom of the screen saying DSUSB connected. Close out of the Blub Exposure screen.

Close Capture Mode screen and then reopen it. <-- you have to do this so DSLR Focus will reconise the DSUSB device.

Gluck .

Forgot to mention, get DSUSB check software from shoestring website. That will indicate if there is any problems with the DSUSB adapter.

http://www.store.shoestringastronomy...p1p0_setup.exe

Once you isolated the issue isn't the DSUSB, then follow the steps i have listed above.

gluck .

thanks eric , by the way do you know if there is a manual specific to the screen shots in version 3.3.15. following the old one is bound to lead to confusion! you must be better at coping with inconsistancies than me. I still dont follow how i get into focus modeand study a stars focus. regards philip

i believe they haven't updated the manual to their latest version. Don't rely on the manual. I havent' really played around with DSLR Focus all that much due to the poor melb weather lately but to get focus, go into focus mode. You have to take random shots at the sky eg: 2-4 seconds , and focus in on a bright star manually until you see diff spikes (if you are using a newt) or place fishing wires infront of a refractor. I havent tried using the camera in my scope as of yet (just purchased my t-mount ring and prime focus adapter the other day). Only thing i have tried is wide-field shots at 55mm.
