The Tarantula Nebula, Officina Stellare RiDk 305 F7.9 - Southern Sky Gems Observatory

Hi guys,

After installing the scope and all additional equipment 200 km into the Kalahari Desert, Namibia, and spending the 2 months since in fine tuning the equipment to best performance, here’s the first full image shot remotely: The Tarantula Nebula.

When planning the Southern Sky Observatory project, Tal and I made a point of replicating, exactly, the feeling of shooting an object out in the field... We sought to give our friends and us the feeling of actually "being there", directly interacting with the familiar interfaces we have grown to love. Sitting in front of the MaximDL familiar screen, and performing all the familiar tasks from many thousands of miles away (while having an online view of the scope's every move), was - for me - the greatest and most satisfying feeling of all.

This image was shot at prime focus, 0.46 arcsec per pixel, and covers 39.95x10.25 arcmin. – a new experience for me altogether.

Here’s the image: http://www.pbase.com...image/158459191 - I hope you like it, and any comments are, as always, very welcome.

A live view of the MaximDL screen: http://tinyurl.com/MaximDLSSG
A live view of the scope (Infra-Red of course :-)): http://tinyurl.com/LiveViewCam
A live view of the scope sensors: http://tinyurl.com/ScopeSensors

More on the observatory can be found here: http://www.pbase.com/boren/southen_sky_gems_observatory

Cheers,
Harel

A professional setup indeed. I like your telescope monitoring software. Remote is amazing. I monitor MaximDL as well, as if I was there at the scope in Australia. All one needs is a high resolution all sky camera view to complete the experience.

Hi Harel,
That is fantastic for your first pic - it's so sharp & full of detail.
What was your best & worst FWHM for the pics?

I can't wait for you to post more.
I will be following your work.
You have a remote observatory that most of us could only dream of:
top telescope, dark skies & good seeing.

cheers
Allan

Congrats on first light! Lovely image Harel! Great detail and you've achieved a very pleasing colour balance.

Cheers, Marcus

PS: And a very nice scope there too!

Great setup Harel, looks very exciting

Overall the Tarantula looks quite nice and sure shows the potential of this Italian dream system, great colours and a great subject...buuut, I have to be honest though (and people on here are probably sick of me mentioning it ) buuuut me not a fan of the look imparted by decon/wavelets processing though, sorry ... the thin bright threads in the nebulosity and uniform tiny dot stars (mostly in the background) are a giveaway although the bright stars kinda look slightly bulbous but this may well be simply a seeing issue of course..?

Great stuff so far and given your folio of amazing images I recon you will be wowing us some more now (thin bright nebulous threads or not )

Mike

Dear Mike,
I invite you to do some Tarantula processing here:

I don't want to see any thin bright nebulous threads or decon/wavelets
with tiny stars.

cheers
Allan
