CDS-600D Finaly Used

Hi All,

Due to the weather in SEQ , I haven't had a chance to get out and use my new CDS-600D Camera. Tonight however the cloud broke for a while and I had a shot at the Rosette Nebula.

Just two frames of 300 seconds at ISO 800 so nothing serious, no flats, darks etc, just happy to have a play with the gear again .

I am really happy with the new camera, much more sensitive in HA than a std camera.

Cheers

Anthony

Anthony ....2 subs....well done...looking forward to some more action from you with this camera with keen eyes.

What temp does it run down to?...Noise wise looks very clean, good detail and colour! The only thing is 300s subs start to bloat stars and washout star saturation colour ...it's just the nature of longer subs.

I suspect you might be able to get away with 240s subs (or less) ...stack lots for a good SNR and be just as good as 300s.

But I repeat only 2 subs @300s...pretty good Indeed!

Beginner Astrophotography? This is stunning for 2 subs @ 300s and no calibration..

Well done!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the feed back I am very happy with the camera and was super surprised when the images came down to the PC. As I mentioned this was just a roughy as I didn't really set up properly etc and the seeing was terrible due to all the moisture at the moment. But I have had the camera for three weeks now and was dying to get first light on it.

Anyone who wants to mod a DSLR (or buy a Central DS one) I cannot say enough to go for it, the extra sensitivity is astounding. Add cooling and your off to a great start. As an aside I used this with my CLS-CCD filter to keep out the Light Pollution as I live 10 kms from Brisbane CBD, this shifts the colour a bit but with a modded camera is very easy to fix. I wouldn't suggest these filters for a standard DSLR though.

I used the Rosette Nebula as a test target as it is very strong HA so was a good comparison to using my std 600D. On the std camera I had to shoot 600 second subs even higher ISO's just to get half this result.

As anyone is South East QLD would know, I don't expect to be getting out any time soon due to the weather

Cheers

Anthony

Hi Brendan,

Gets to 30'c below ambient as reported by the camera, but Central DS say the actual CMOS chip is 5 - 7 degrees cooler again so I estimate on a 25'c evening it is running at about -10 to -15 'C.

I did a comparison between my CDS-600D and EOS 600D camera here: http://www.astrophotography.id.au/ce...me-comparison/ when I got the camera as it was raining and had to play with my new toy.

I agree lower subs are needed but didn't realise at the time how much more sensitive this camera was over my std camera so will learn from this.

I hope that answers your questions

Cheers

Anthony

Anthony,

The most notable thing I see is lack of noise and damn good sensitivity. Star bloat and colour saturation loss with DSLRs with long subs is a problem to may DSLR users.

It's just the way the stars are smeared across a few pixels and the colour tends to appear at the edge of the star pixels, I see this a lot on my canon. They only way to fix this is lower sub time and more subs...maybe even higher ISO and shorter subs.

Given your low sub count, 2 subs, I suspect you'll get away with shorter subs on this target and indeed I must say this is a very tricky target to image....with low surface brightness and high brightness central coloured stars.

I can see your camera has already excelled and stand amazed! Well done indeed.
