If the image is sharpened first, then, the deconvolution (or whatever algorithm Canon is employing) is only going to exacerbate the sharpened image and induce halos/artefacts.
I've tested this myself and it seems to make sense -- it's subtle, but, the artefacts appear.
Subtle sharpening post-DLO is fine.
