Post New Vixen VSD100 Apo

Vixen will be releasing their new f3.8 100mm apo astrograph very shortly. It's been designed to cover 645 medium format chips with a completely flat field.

Just ran those specs and the specs for a Pentax 645D camera through CCD Calc. At approx 40MP for the chip, the image scale is 3.25arcsec/pixel with an FoV of 6.5 x 4.9 degrees. You could take the NA, Veil or Rosette in one shot of the FoV (and then some), or just about the whole of the Vela SN, LMC or M31 in the one frame for each individual target. With a medium format camera, the FoV is so large it would be impractical to shoot anything but the largest targets or ultrawide field panoramas through the scope. M16 just looks like a red smudge at those specs With an FLi Proline 8300, you could just about get the HH/Flame/IC434 and the Running Man/Orion combo in on one FoV. You wouldn't want to go any larger in camera size than that, I feel.

It would be a nice scope to own, however, you would have to be careful in your choice of camera and not go overboard with it. Otherwise you'll be left squinting at multiple targets spread right across your FoV.
