For starry timelapses, a cheap fast prime will work fine.

If you were interested in printing large, then, it makes sense to spend the dollars and get a good lens.

My landscape work has been done with the 17-40mm f/4L USM. While it's too slow for timelapses, the prints that I make are sharp as. Even at f/16.
