Don't stuff around with zooms Mike, get a prime. The best zoom in the game is the Nikon in the range you are looking at but Canon make some nice primes. An f2.8 lens is affordable and will work well for you. Also it will be affordable too. Consider the 24 f2.8. It is quite wide on a FX camera and is only $400 at DWI.
You don't really need it to be USM for landscape or wide astro work. It needs to be fast in f ratio only.
