Interesting comparison on that French site.

It is as I suspected that Canon DSLRs have hit a wall of development and the 50D over the 40D shows almost no improvement.

The current trend of increasing the number of pixels whilst keeping the sensor size the same means smaller pixels which tends to mean more noise. So it seems the Canon engineers are mainly concerned with reducing the noise from the smaller pixels to the same levels which they seem to do quite well.

Also keep in mind to see a noticeable improvement from extra pixels it has to be something like 40% not just a few extra megapixels. Thats more of a marketing push.
