The 17-85 will probably be fine for landscape shots in NZ.
In NZ my wife took some great shots with her Nikon 18-200 lens when we went hiking on the south island, as well as great shots in Nepal with that same lens.

Having said that, the Tokina 12-24 would be a nice addition depending upon where you go and what you do.

My wife has done two trips to nepal and on the second trip did NOT use her Tokina 12-24 for Nikon (nice lens- very solid), rather preferring to use her 18-200 only (too much dust around to change lenses). I really missed the extra wide shots the 12-24 produced.

Of course, it depends upon where you will be going on the south island. are you just driving around, and popping in and out of the mountains, or will you be going on hikes? I think you would get more out of the 12-24mm lens if you are out in the mountains.

just my $0.20 worth.
