If anyone wants to toy around with numbers of their own, there's a bunch of on-line calculators and spreadsheets available via this site (scroll down to about 3/4ths of the page).

One of them (a great on-line calculator by John Smith) is particularly instrumental in quickly demonstrating the effect of varying your different circumstances on the different proportions of noise in your signal, as well as at which point read-out noise does become a serious issue (hint: it's exactly the sort of circumstances under which Bassnut's experience taught him to resort to hardware binning - dark site, broad area, faint object, narrow band).
