Dennis is right. Even though it's an avi, there's some formats that registax won't recognise.
But you can open it in Registax, and "Save as AVI", which saves it as a "standard" (?) conforming avi that registax will then recognise. Sound could have been a problem as well.
I regularly use avi's over 1 gig in Registax without issue, but I have heard of people having problems with large avi's.
