CCD’s are however far from dead. New EMCCD’s have close to 100% QE with ultra low read noise....unfortunately it’s the price that is keeping them out of amateur hands...for now at least  . |
Careful calibration and lots of dithering really helps with removing FPN thankfully.
You are right with EMCCD, both with them being amazing and 10x the cost of any comparable CCD/CMOS
