As long as the battery has enough charge its ok. Its more in the cold I find some batteries cut out and I lose my power to the handset and motors.
Alpha Centauri is ok but I think Spica might be getting too low. Can you try using Antares as its higher in the sky?
I mean hit enter a few times to goto the object you have chosen.
It sounds to me its got the wrong information in the handset if it goes straight down or up.
In regards to the co-ordinates its got S and not N to confirm? I would check all your settings after alignment to confirm they are set correctly.
The other option is to try with another synscan handset to test if its faulty as the motors sound they are working ok?
