Nice comparison... Nice shot too, actually! The Canon 2x Extender is also a decent bit of kit, and makes a much greater (well, 2x!) focal length difference.
On something like the 300mm L series it's superb. There are a couple of lenses that it won't AF on due to the 2 stops of light loss. I think there is only 1 stop of loss on the 1.4x.
