I actually felt pretty stupid that it took that long to figure it out. Obviously over thinking it at the time. Even so, I did do searches for rocket launches, but not thoroughly enough.
Still have some queries though: what would have been the source of the sound I heard? Why did everything disappear? Also, is it actually possible for someone to witness an astronomical event that happened 15000km away? I'm not real up on orbital mechanics. ;-)
Shasta55: yes, a naked eye observation. Right place, right time. Massive odds...shoulda got a Lotto!
