I did take I think around 10 or 30x 30second subs of the core during this imaging session. I haven’t done anything with them yet lol.

Your advice is spot on though and I may have even over done it at 30seconds.

I will sit down at some point soon and re-do this entire image using a few new techniques and try and mask in the core

30 seconds can be good too! Depending on ISO/Gain. You won't know until you process that stack to see what you have, but even 30 seconds will bring more of the core out anyway.

14 stops just refers to the "stop" of light that's measured in photography. Gaining a stop doubles the amount of light, losing a stop reduces it by half.
You can do this through combinations of aperture, ISO/Gain, shutter speed/exposure length.
Modern cameras are starting to hit 14 stops of dynamic range which is awesome.
