Up until I recently bought the Canon 300 F/2.8L I had a Tokina 300 F/2.8 that was very similar in design to the tamron... For deep sky imaging, these lenses are incredible... Yes they are restrictive being a non zoom, but for me, when im terrestrial imaging, I always use 2 bodies anyway, with 2 different lenses...

Most recently I've been using my 1D mkIII with 500mm F/4L and 40D with 300 F/2.8 for wildlife photography... I think primes are the way to go if you're after sheer image quality. Zooms are convienient as walk around lenses as they offer flexibillity, however I've never really had the need for flexibility in a telephoto... I use short zooms every now and then.. 10-22/17-40/16-35, as wider shots you regularly wish you had just a bit more length or a bit wider view... but if you're shopping for a longer lens, primes generally win out in both price and image quality.

For 2500 the Tamron 300 F/2.8 is a pretty good deal... Although you can get the Sigma 300 F/2.8 for $3500 new... 1k for a warranty and guaranteed "as new" condition.. is pretty cheap
