I use Virtual Dub to export the frames as BMP files, and then I drag those BMP files into registax. I've had over 5000 frames loaded using this method.

The reason I do this is because I do some pre-processing of the BMP's, including using ppmcentre to centre the object in the frame, crop the frame and rank based on quality. That way it's quicker and easier for registax to handle the smaller frames, and you can easily discard the bad quality frames before you get to registax.

It adds some time to a normal planetary image processing routine, but I've got it scripted now so I just set it to run through all of my avi's and come back in an hour or two when it's finished.
