In Photoshop selective colours does wonders to highlight certain areas in and around the Milky Way. I go through all the colours and swing the mouse left to right until I see something I like.

Mild Saturation on the MW before you mask it can bring out some of those reds/oranges and blues. But you can easily go to far. What ever pleases your eye.

Believe me you're doing a great job and you'll probably notice that each time you edit a new photo it gets easier and something about it looks better than the last.

Thanks for the tips Carlos, yeah started using masks and have a link to a youtube video I found to help in the top post thanks for the advice, I'll keep plugging away and see what looks pleasing to the eye. I agree you can go too far with the saturation etc.
