People have been ripped off when buying and selling on this site . Not so long ago the same dob was sold to several people and never delivered and sellers have sent an item on in good faith only to find no payment has or will be made with no way to get it back besides setting the police on the buyer but it is a rarity rather than the norm thank goodness. Perhaps the seller has experienced this or been annoyed by people pulling out at the last moment which should not be a problem unless they have gone and spent the money before they received payment, if so tuff luck, the buyer has the right to change their mind. I do not understand the need for a deposit, you have the cash, you want the item so buy it, it is not a department store. If you don't have the full amount then the seller would be foolish to overlook another opportunity to sell the gear outright. I operate as Marc (multiweb) has stated above, it is the only intelligent thing to do. If you are buying get the sellers details and contact them outside of the site, if you are selling wait for the cash to arrive before posting, simple. Having bought and sold lots of gear on this site I can say it works and I have never had a problem either as a buyer or seller, the vast majority are honest folk.
