Ok... The Mt Blackheath and Hargraves sites are about 2h drive from most parts of Sydney, at an altitude of 1000 metres so also expect temps below zero. These are about the limit if you're going for an evening and aiming to be home in the small hours.
The pony club is 2.5 hours to the north, in the hunter valley.
The ASNSW has an observatory with a 16" f7 dob, at Mt Bowen (1.5 hours northwest) and a dark sky site called Wiruna, about 3-3.5 hours drive - but that's an all-weekend effort.
