Hi Robert,
Invest another couple of hundred dollars in an EQ2 or EQ3 equatorial mount, buy a cheap long exposure timer off ebay and you will be amazed at the great photos you will get just with your current camera and lens.
Take Matt's advice and post your photos on IIS, you'll be amazed at how quickly you will improve.
