BOSS SN way down South
Hi all,
Last night after a week of fabulous skies over Brissy and 1500 images for the month, I chalked up my 7th personal Supernova discovery and the 61st for the BOSS team.
It is way down South in Octans in a 14.7 magnitude galaxy known as ESO 007-6 aka PGC42645. ESO being its European Southern Observatory catalogue number and PGC its Principal Galaxy Catalogue number.
The galaxy is a relatively close 105 million light years away and the PSN (Possible SuperNova) glowing at mag 16.9r is reasonably bright and may brighten more. It was not in my image on the 23rd April.
At declination of -84deg it is way South and Stu just beats me for the most southerly discovery at -85deg.
We have informed our professional contacts in Chile and South Africa and now await a spectra confirming just what type of Supernova it is.
In the meantime maybe some here might like to image it and monitor it. Don't know if it will brighten enough for amateur spectra, maybe.
Thanks to Greg Bock for spending time doing the report. Thanks to Stu for the lovely image below.
Just this week a life long friend of mine and my wife passed away, way too early.
Our dear friend Jenni Keen, this "new star" is outshining all around it in its short life time, just as you did.
Farewell dear friend.
