I've done similar experiments Mike. My conclusion was too high an ISO blows it out too much and reduces dynamic range. ISO1600 or 800 may've given a different look here. High ISO seems good for short shots and lower ISO seems better in longer shots.
The highlights get blown out by the high ISO is the problem (low dynamic range).
