Beautiful photos Mike, your Milky Ways are awesome. I too prefer the 1st image mainly because it's in focus. How far were you from the tree stump?
I downloaded an app to calculate FOV for my photos, really handy. In this instance at 50mm the closest you could get with infinity focus would be approx 4m at f/16.
