I heard one of those portable speakers you dock your smartphone to the other night and it wasn't too bad at all. Lacked bottom end of course but the sound was nice and clean. Thinking about it I'd say the BoomBox is for either novelty value or where space is seriously limited (eg backpacking). I'd think for car-based camping a 'proper' portable system is a better bet. One possible idea (totally unproven of course) is that, if the portable speakers lack bass you also have a boombox. You mount the boombox on a large object (eg car roof), split the signal and let the speakers deliver the clean top end while the boombox adds a bit of bass to 'flesh out' the sound.
