Hi Chris,
Why not buy a used iPod nano? The 5th generation ones are pretty cheap on eBay and are usually 8Gb. My two kids have these and they still use them, even though they both have iPhones as well now. If they can stand up to teenagers, they may even stand up to the car door every now and then!
