Pat, The Pup is on the East side of Sirius, and is located at about the same distance away as Rigel's binary star, which is much easier to spot. To check the direction in your eyepiece, you can briefly turn off tracking, in which case the stars will head West. It is said that the best time to see it is during twilight when the contrast is not so great.
