I havent used a broadband filter myself but all the reports I have read suggest that they dont do a great deal, particularly when it comes to countering light polution.
I have a Lumicon UHC narrow band filter and my experience with that filter shows its much more effective in dark skies than from my backyard.
There is no substitute for dark skies! (well high magnifications help).
